The process for doing ALA DBS Checks should be as follows:
Complete the attached Standard DBS Application Form and email me at [email protected]
Standard DBS Application 16102024
Once returned, a pink DBS form will be posted to the member which will need to be completed and returned to me at HO along with 3 items of original ID (1 of which must be photo ID) – please refer to the attached guidelines for what documents need to be produced to verify identity. Original documents should be sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, or similar, and we will endeavour to return these the same day as received via this method to minimise delay.
An invoice for £36 payable by the ALA will be raised upon receipt of a completed Standard DBS application form – which will confirm the ALA member and member number
Once the member receives their ID documents back from us, we do confirm that the MLA never receives a copy of the DBS and we therefore rely on members forwarding us a copy upon receipt. The original certificate will always be posted to the members home address. The onus is on the member to send us a copy, we do not chase for it.
It would be extremely beneficial for every ALA member to sign up to the DBS Update Service, which can be done using the F reference on the pink forms sent to members to complete. The attached leaflet provides further information. The subscription must be kept up to date by the members themselves and the service is run via the DBS, its not done via the MLA (there can be some confusion that the update service is something the MLA do, it isn’t, it’s done via the DBS) – https://www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service
For members resident outside of England and Wales will need to obtain a criminal record check in the county they reside:
For Scottish residents, one will need to be obtained via Disclosure Scotland: https://www.mygov.scot/organisations/disclosure-scotland
For Northern Ireland residents, one will need to be obtained via Access NI: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/accessni-criminal-record-checks/apply-accessni-check
